Today, Edens' Fresh Horses post is a little -- well, controversial, maybe. Which, you know, is not ENTIRELY unexpected....
You should go and read it now, because I can't sum up what she said better than she said it.
So off you go. I'll wait.

Right.
So.
Funeral songs.
Well, this is something I've thought about, not a little, or once or twice, but a LOT.
And not just my own funeral songs, either, but ones I'd pick for my husband, too.
Having buried one kid already (it's OK, he was already dead. Just sayin') it's like I'm always rehearsing for the next tragedy.
Hoping, perhaps, that way it won't take me by surprise.
As if.
Right now, the song I would pick for me is this
Just Breathe (Pearl Jam)
Yes I understand that life every must end, aw huh,..
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, aw huh,..
I’m a lucky man to count on both hands
The ones I love,..
Some folks just have one,
Others they got none, aw huh,..
Stay with me,..
Let’s just breathe.
Practiced are my sins,
Never gonna let me win, aw huh,..
Under everything, just another human being, aw huh,..
Yeh, I don’t wanna hurt, there’s so much in this world
To make me bleed.
Stay with me,..
You’re all I see.
Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn’t now I’m a fool you see,..
No one knows this more than me.
As I come clean.
I wonder everyday
as I look upon your face, aw huh,..
Everything you gave
And nothing you would take, aw huh,..
Nothing you would take,..
Everything you gave.
Did I say that I need you?
Oh, Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn’t now I’m a fool you see,..
No one know this more than me.
As I come clean.
Nothing you would take,..
everything you gave.
Hold me till I die,..
Meet you on the other side.
That last bit -- that's the part that gets me. Hold me till I die. Meet you on the other side.
It always makes me cry, because I can't believe that our love dies when we go. I have to believe there's something after. Otherwise, what's the point?

Fabio is not that keen on me picking funeral songs for him. It makes him nervous. Possibly because of this post about me wanting his bones.
But I picked one anyway (man up, Princess) and it would be Supermans' Song by Crash Test Dummies.
Because, he's my hero, and the world really never will see another man like him.

I made a couple of tags about this recently and I'm making another one about my funeral song soon. Because this world totally needs more papercraft about death and dying. Doncha think?
Anyway, head to Edens' place and link up with YOUR funeral song, and tell her I sent you, just in case there's like, commission or something. I need more paper.
"Just breathe" might be a little awkward at your funeral. I've never given my song a moments thought, but now it's all I can think about. I like Cults "Go Outside" right now. Again, awkward. x
ReplyDeleteToni, i have mine alreay picked out to be played to my gorgeous hubby (after a close call) at my funeral ..

I'd never heard that before, chook -- it's beautiful!!

Eddie Vedder is a poet. Love so many of their songs. Great choice.
ReplyDeleteI'm not planning on having a funeral, so haven't given any thought to a funeral song. My body is going to the medical school at the uni. for research and teaching. If the kids bury me instead, all I know is I do NOT want Amazing Grace played. It's so overdone.
ReplyDeleteNice choices.
ReplyDeleteNot-so-nice thought - but such is life (or death).
:-)
Pearl Jam are amazing and so is that song. I picked an Eddie Vedder one for mine - Rise. Both your tune and the one I picked regularly bring tears to my eyes
ReplyDeleteNo hymns for me because this music is more beautiful to my ears and heart x
Your tags brought tears to my eyes, they are beautiful and sad.
ReplyDeleteI like that the song you have chosen says the things you might have not said during life. "As I come clean". One final chance to say "I love you".
Eddie Vedder has a beautiful voice. I love your song choice.
ReplyDeleteYour post made me think of this song by "Love Me" by Collin Raye:

That song can make me cry EVERY time I hear it.
Oh man, I love that Pearl Jam song.
ReplyDeleteNever in my life have I heard Just Breathe before. It is BEAUTIFUL!
ReplyDeleteToni, such a beautiful, real post. Thanks so much for linking up and telling me (us? people?) your thoughts. I love it.

"Having buried one kid already (it's OK, he was already dead. Just sayin')"
ReplyDeleteHaving also buried one kid already this line made me snort. Cool songs, nice work. Love to you.
I just want to thank everyone who visited my blog for the first time (apologies that it wasn't as awesome as a visit to Eden) and special thanks to everyone who took the time to comment!
ReplyDeleteAnd to those who visit regularly -- some days I wonder why the hell I do this, and you guys encourage me to keep going. It's all your fault.

I also have never heard this song. Love it. I do love Eddie's voice - it evokes such emotion.
ReplyDeleteOh God, Eddie Vedder's voice moves me to tears.
ReplyDeleteI'm adding this to my list.
I love Pearl Jam, but somehow I haven't heard "Just Breathe" before now. It's beautiful, and sent shivers down my spine. I hope Eddie Vedder never dies.
ReplyDeleteEddie's voice, Eddie's voice... Bliss. So soothing.
ReplyDeletei hadn't heard this song before - it is amazing... love.
ReplyDeleteAnother Eddie song! The man's a genius. Love your humour by the way :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed listening to the Crash Test Dummies' song. So beautiful and the kind of testament fitting for a hubby
ReplyDeleteMa'm please, The world should be spared from Eddie Vedder. He may write meaningful lyrics but sorry to say that most definitely and way too guaranteed that he is not what he seems to be in the public eye. He is overrated and in all reality, not a really nice guy. I promise you that.
